China is once again on high alert—this time, not for COVID or any new variant, but for a rising health concern that’s been slowly creeping in: Chikungunya virus.
As of 05 August 2025, health authorities in southern provinces of China, including Guangdong, Hainan, and Guangxi, have confirmed over 2,000 suspected cases of Chikungunya, with 412 lab-confirmed infections so far. While there are no deaths reported yet, the rapid spread and unfamiliarity with this mosquito-borne illness have sparked worry among both locals and international health experts.
